The Plasticene_Canyon / 2022

<퇴적:플라스틱세>는 분쇄된 폐플라스틱 조각을 3D 프린팅 하여 억 겹의 세월 이후 도래할 미래의 지층을 구현한다. 작가는 3D 프린팅의 FDM(적층) 방식을 땅이 퇴적되는 과정과 동일하게 바라보고, 무작위의 폐플라스틱들이 혼합되어 출력(퇴적) 되는 과정에서 발생하는 표면의 질감을 '층리'로 빗대어 표현한다. '층리'가 지구의 역사를 들여다보는 창으로써의 역할을 한다는 점에 근거하여 작가는 <퇴적:플라스틱세>를 통해 현재 우리가 플라스틱 시대를 살아가고 있다는 것을 표현하고자 한다. 사실 플라스틱의 절정기는 지구의 연대기적 시각으로 바라보았을 때 극히 미세한 찰나의 틈이지만, 그 짧은 틈새에 우리, 자본세에 뛰어든 인간은 지구 표면의 70% 이상을 뒤덮을 만큼의 방대한 플라스틱 쓰레기를 만들어왔다.

작가는 SF 적 상상과 과장을 통해 이 미세한 틈을 극도로 확대하여 플라스틱 지층이 만들어낼 형상을 표현하고 현시대의 인간과 관계시킴으로써, 관람객으로 하여금 인류세와의 간극을 좁히고자 한다.

<퇴적: 플라스틱세_절벽>은 두 개의 플라스틱 절벽을 마주 보게 위치시켜 절벽을 형성한 작품이다. 절벽에 들어선 인간 방문객은 휴먼스케일 이상의 절벽을 맞이하고 그 사이를 걸어가며, 인류세의 한 장면에 접속하는 경험을 맞이한다.

Deposition: The Plasticene is a series of 3D sculptures that illustrate future strata that will be found in hundreds of million years. The artist digitally rendered an imaginary plastic rock and 3D printed it using pulverized waste plastic as material. As for a reflection of deposition in the geological process, he applies the FDM (fused deposition modeling) method of 3D printing. He observes the process of printing during which the printer nozzle deposits layer by layer of randomly mixed plastic filaments and shows the textures created on the surface of the output, implying the sedimentary structure of rock beds.

In this work, the artist is trying to suggest that we are now living in a plastic-centric epoch, making reference to the sedimentary beds through which we understand the geological history of Earth. Although the peak of the plastic epoch may be just a hiccup in the Earth’s chronology, we humans here in the Capitalocene have produced enormous volumes of plastic waste to the extent that it can cover more than 70% of the surface of Earth even in such a short moment in time.

In an attempt to guide viewers toward a clearer perception in the Anthropocene, the artist enlarges this minute sliver of time by means of imagination and exaggeration accompanied with a science-fiction touch. He makes a connection between the shape of the plastic strata and humanity in the present day.
